Afam Power Plc is a successor thermal power generating company from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, located in the oil/gas rich Rivers State of Nigeria.
The Plant, initially had an installed capacity of 776 megawatts of electricity.
It is an open cycle gas turbine plant and was commissioned in phases between 1962 and 2001 as shown below:
Phase 1: 1962 – 1963, gas turbine units 1 to 4 (decommissioned and disposed)
Phase 2: 1976 – 1978, gas turbine units 5 -12 (decommissioned and disposed)
Phase 3: 1983 gas turbine units 13 – 18 ( 17 and 18 operational generating a combined output of 120 MW)
Phase 4: 2001 as turbine units 19 – 20 (not operational awaiting major overhauling)
The Company, is characterized with the following :
* 132/330KV Transmission Substations
* 28” gas supply pipe-line to the station’s gas scrubbers and 8” gas supply pipe line
Its scrubbers to the turbines.
*Raw and Portable Water/Access Roads
* Staff Residential Quarters/Medical Services Unit/Educational Services Unit
Given its good community relations and strategic position in the Niger Delta Region, Afam Power Plc has the potential of becoming a leading power plant in Nigeria when its proximity to natural gas, availability of other raw materials and the increasing demand for power in Nigeria are taken into consideration.
The company already has a long standing Power Purchase Agreement, Gas Transportation Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding with its host community in place.
Afam Power Plc was incorporated as a distinct Public Limited Liability (PLC) on November 8, 2005. Full unbundling and transfer of its assets and liabilities were completed on 1st July, 2006.
